RFID technologies and applications.

RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) is to automatically identify objects by means of radiio communication technology. In RFID tags or cards are used as a data storage media and telecommunication device. RFID tags or cards are built with a base, antenna on the base, and IC chip bonded on the antenna. Telecommunication between the interrogator and the RFID tags or cards (transponders) is established in the following mechanism. An interrogator sends radio wave from the antenna to the transponders to supply power and activate the IC chip, and to send the command to the RFID tags or cards. The IC chip process the command and respond to the interrogator by modulating backscatted radio.
RFID tag/card can carry much more data than barcode, and it has more functionalities and advantages over the barcode. RFID tags/cards can be read from the distance (0.1m-10m depending upon the radio frequency ). ・No need for line of sight; i.e., Invisible RFID tags/cards on the side or inside of the box made of radio transparent materials such as paper or plastic can be read, likewise the RFID tags/cards stained with dirts can be read. (Radio shielding, reflecting or absorbing materials would affect the read.) ・ Multiple reads; i.e., RFID tags attached to multiple items objects can be read simultaneously. Features of RFID technology and the relevant applications are as follows:
1.Quick and accurate identification and authentication → Safety and Compliance
Students and staffs at schools, offices, factories, hospitals and other facilities would carry RFID cards/tags as the ID to get around and pass entrance / exit of the buildings and restricted area. RFID card/tag are used also for vehicle identification at parking lots and the gate to the designated area .
In the hospitals doctors, technicians, nurses would carry RFID cards/tags, and patients wear wrist bands with RFIDtag inside to record when, who, to whom, what medication was practiced in order to avoid errors or accidents in medication.
In the cattle farms RFID ear tags are applied to the cows or piggs to record feeding, medication, health condition, etc.
2.Genuine authentication → Safety and Anti-counterfeit
RFID tags with unique IDs would be applied to tobaccos, liquor, branded luxury items, casino chips or pharmaceuticals for the genuine authentication, anti-counterfeit.
3.Quick and stress-free counting → Accurate Inventory by Frequent Counting
RFID tags would be applied to the individual assets, equipment, items at schools, offices, factories, warehouses, hospitals, or merchandises at stores. Unique ID of the RFIDtag is associated with the name and other related information of each objects. Stock counting with RFID tags is a breeze with no error by using a handheld reader. It is more than ten times faster than with barcode.
4.Quick and accurate inspection, sorting, and picking → Accurate Shipping / Realtime Tracking
RFID tags would be applied to the individual itemes, cases, dollys or pallets. The unique IDs of the tags are associated with the items or the aggregate of the items, or returnable assets. By reading multiple tags moving through the gate simultaneously the incoming items can be inspected and sorted quickly and accurately with no error.

5.Visibility of objects in the supply chain
RFID
tags applied to the individual items, cases, dollys or pallets moving through the supply chain can be read by the interrogators installed at critical locations in the supply chain to track the objects and event data to the central server. The event data would include time, location, from where, to where, why, how, and conditions and environment, etc. All or some of the logistics information can be shared among the members of the supply chain such as factories, warehouses, DC, shops, consumers. Such logstics information is essential in making business decistions in manufacturing, purchasing, stocking, merchandizing as well as ccom reuse/recycling, product recall, etc.
RFID tags applied to the airline baggage tags can be read more accurately than the legacy barcode. Thus number of lost baggages particularly in transit (unreadable barcode on squashed baggage tags) could be reduced, and the mishandled baggages could be found more quickly for better service.
6.Visibility of work progress → less error, higher eifficiency and quality
RFID
tags would be applied to the individual parts or the works in progress or to electronic KANBAN plates attached to the work trays. The interrogators installed at critical points would read the tag and report to the server about when, by whom, with what, and how the works were machined or assembled. RFID tags would help identify right tools, right parts and right works in the assembly process.
7.Traceability of the pedigree and logistics of the pharmaceuticals or the like.
RFID
tags would be applied to the containers of food or pharmaceuticals for traceability.
